Fashion Garden / Primavera

The assignment for this collection was to design and make a sculpture constructed with repurposed materials. Once the sculpture design was finalized, I designed a 9 look collection based off of inspiration from the sculpture.

Materials used to build my sculpture were : over 2,000 feet of wire, metal springs, aluminum window screen, propeller blades, aluminum cans, foil candy wrappers, and metal wire casing.
The design concept was to build a sculpture with harsh materials but to create a feminine, soft look.

I named this design " Primavera " which means spring. I wanted it to mimic life, blooming crazy and out of control, wild, tangled roots, and feminine beauty. Primavera turned out to be the perfect name- it not only captured my inspiration, but also fit well because I used  buckets and buckets full of metal springs!

My hands were calloused, blistered and scratched, by the time I finished this piece, but I would do it all over again. I loved making this piece and designing the collection. It helped me get out of my comfort zone, both in making a different kind of art out of new materials and by exploring a different style of fashion illustration.

The sculpture was displayed in the Fashion Gardens on the Magnificent Mile in Chicago from June until September 1, 2008. It was also showcased at the Magnificent Mile Fashion Garden kickoff party before the Sculptures went on display on Michigan Avenue.
